Londonwide Cleaners Celebrate NVQ Qualifications

In today’s safety conscious world it is important that all work be carried out using HSE regulated and approved methods. We apply safe systems of work in Following the successful completion of a rigorous four-month training and assessment process, the cleaners employed by LondonWide Cleaning Services Ltd have been awarded City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 Qualifications.

‘When we first became aware of the opportunity of securing 100% government funding for a training course,’ says Danny McGovern, Managing Director of LondonWide, ‘we were frankly a little sceptical.’

LondonWide has a strict employment policy, and only ever hires fully experienced window cleaners, so initially Danny wasn’t convinced of the value of such a course.

‘Also, although the actual direct cost was funded, we still had the indirect cost of lost time during the three-day training schedule.’

However, as the training was spread over three months it only required the release of each trainee for one day per month, so Danny decided to go ahead – and he chose to take part in the course himself!

Training was carried out at Merton College in South London, and the trainer and A1 Assessor was Andrew Willis of IMPACT43. The required assessments were carried out at a number of LondonWide Blue Chip Client Properties, including the exclusive David Lloyd Centre in Cheam.

‘From the outset,’ says Danny, ‘the team was really happy with the course – and so was I. Andrew Willis has over 30 years experience, and he didn’t just talk the talk: he also walked the walk. If you’re going to stand in front of guys, some of them with 25 years in the industry, you need to know what you’re talking about, and Andy fits the bill. We picked up a lot of new information, and this has encouraged us to make some minor but important changes to the way we deliver our service.’

Andy knew from the start that he had his work cut out.

‘It’s rare to find such a large group of seasoned and experienced window cleaners,’ he said. ‘However LondonWide are one of my favourite groups this year and they stood out amongst the 300 window cleaners who achieved their level2 City and Guilds Qualification. They were a great bunch of guys, and I can see why Danny has so many long term clients, which is a credit to both himself, and staff like supervisor “Speedy” Gonzalez.

I would not hesitate to recommend Danny and his team in the future.’

Danny felt the course has given all his window cleaners a new lease of life. ‘They’ve been really positive and enjoyed the process from start to finish, and our clients are also aware of this new qualification. This is the foundation for the way forward for us in training and providing competency. Our industry has too many contractors who pay lip service to progress – but we are not one of them.’
